My relationship with Technology

In the first video we watched on this topic in class, it talks about the expectation of the future in 1964. Some expectations seemed quite unrealistic but some looked impossible to have them now like an overpass and a underpass. That seems so normal now but was weird to imagine for them.

That is the unique relationship we have with technology because it never stops to amaze us with its evolution. In the second video it talked about how depressing the world can be with everyone's faces in their electronics. Even though this was a cartoon it was a little realistic which scares me alot.

I don't have an addiction to technology personally, i can go a while without social media just because i camp a lot and can live without it but chose to have it, whereas with music i struggle not to have my phone in instances where i am outside in nature. I am not really a tech fiend or good at it so i really don't have a relationship with it. This is ironic because i am a Gen Z'er.

I believe that there are pros to technology:

  1. Saves Time- For example Math. The first mechanical Calculator was invented in 1642. The first Digital Calculator was invented in 1975. Before this time individuals probably spent a lot more time hand solving nauseating math problems by hand with pen or pencil and paper, but now all we have to do is do the bare minimum by ourselves and then the calculator does the rest for us.

  2. Better Communication- In the days before phones in general were not invented, communicating was not necessarily hard but it took a longer amount of time to get messages across to people. Now the evolution of phones even allows us to talk to people in different countries.

  3. Technology allows us invent new ways to learn- I empathize with Med students specifically. For example a while ago when women went into labor and it was time to get the babies out, they would push on the stomach constantly as the women push. This obviously caused issues down the line for the woman because they have stomachs not squishy balls. Now there are ways to make the beautiful process of giving birth so much easier for the woman, family and baby like epidural or a c-section or even just an ultrasound (which is the before process of giving birth). Cons of Technology:

  4. Technology reduces job opportunities for humans- Mankind is definitely being replaced by technology very slowly but efficiently and quickly. For example in class we watched a video where truck drivers who make a decent living importing and exporting important goods from place to place, but now self driving trucks are in the process of doing the work for them which in turn means that in the long run humans in that job sector will not have jobs which means they will not gain any income.

  5. It makes us lazy and and dependent- I am definitely a walking example of this. I tend to abuse calculators for problems i know i have the ability to solve, in severe examples though as humans we always are obsessed with getting more and more even if that more is enough. My fear is that we will become completely useless.

  6. Radiation- This is a health problem. Radiation as we know in the long run can cause your organs to lose function very slowly. It is slowly right now because we are being exposed in small amounts whereas in not too long from now basic things that are not technology based will be technologicalized.
